On Saturday, Punjab police detained Amritpal Singh, the leader of separatist group Waris Punjab De, in Mehatpur area of Jalandhar district. Despite managing to give the police a slip earlier in the day, a few of his associates were also detained. The chase was even streamed live from his vehicle. As a result, internet services have been suspended across the state until 12 noon on Sunday. Punjab police also detained several social media influencers in a statewide crackdown.
Senior police officers are yet to disclose the case/s in which Amritpal has been arrested, and the action comes a day before he was expected to start the second leg of Khalsa Wahir from Mukatsar. This follows a clash with police last month when Amritpal and his supporters broke through barricades and barged into the Ajnala Police Station in the outskirts of Amritsar city, some brandishing swords and guns, demanding the release of one of Amritpal’s aides.
In response to recent events, Punjab Police has asked citizens to maintain peace and harmony, urging them not to panic, spread fake news or hate speech. The action taken by police underscores the ongoing efforts to maintain law and order in the state. Throughout the operation, a heavy police force was involved.
